I will just skip the Etsu magazine and Tsukiyo no Fromage vol 2, the former is just to get some art magazine, the latter for scanlation, but you can still read more about them in icie’s review here and there.

Girls Girls Girls 4
As this artbook has a number, I feel compelled into getting it, especially since I already own the 3 previous one, and I have been happy with them. This 4 issue like the other collect the artwork from the Etsu magazine, and only the cover is a new artwork by Tinkle, which is the first highlight for me. Now there are always some artist I only find in the Etsu/Girls Girls Girls, like A=g, as it’s not so easy to get her doujinshi. Now there is one thing which bother me in this book; it’s the rather long undressing theme in the middle, and it’s not really SFW. It’s a bit too ecchi for my taste, and while I’m not bothered by the ecchiness itself, when it comes to artbook I prefer it to be consistent in either safe image, or ecchi, but not a mix with ecchi in plain middle. Otherwise, It’s really great as I rarely get magazine especially the Etsu which is quite thick. For a more in-depth review, you can read natalie’s.

Ashiato
2009 is the year I started to collect Kantoku’s publication; so I get the previous doujinshi in the Check x Check collection, and the C76 and C77 sets. Now a commercial artbook is another beast as it implies some enjoyable thickness compared to most doujinshi, and Ashiato deserve in this aspect. Quite a lot of full page illustration as I like, and even when there is 2 it’s really nice to see. There is so artist which are just better to see on paper, and I think that Kantoku is one of them. The paper of the cover is the usual smooth one, but it fits the soft color tone used for it. Then, as Kantoku use a quite contrasted and vibrant artstyle, the paper by it’s semi matte finish puts that little bit of sparkle which makes it a wonder to see. 100 Masters of Bishojo painting
To finish, the delayed artbook, which is a collection of 100 artists as you could guess, with 2 pages each, usually one illustration full page, and the other page has smaller ones. The choice of artist is very good; I don’t know/remember a good part of them, so it’s also the chance for discovery. It’s too bad that there is no Tinkle though inside, not for the art as chance it would have been already published, but just to know their gender. Artist gender seems like so funny topic for enthusiast as it’s never easy to know their gender. Depending of the artworks, it seems like we are more inclined to think that the artist is either male or female. I will note though that some didn’t put their gender in it like Shimeko. There is also some wallpaper to download; I wonder if it’s not also a way to check for oversea traffic…

The added value is certainly the English translation. Yes this is a publication for a more international audience, and they know who they are since they kept the term “doujinshi” most the time. As I goes through the pages, I noticed that my attention is focused on the CV and message of the artist. It’s the first time that such information are easily available for us foreigners, and this is certainly a nice point. Until now, all these artists always felt distant to me and we would still be watchers from afar with our telescope as if they were unreachable stars, but this artbook make them feel closer, as a bridge between us and them, and they don’t lose their sparkles. If you feel like they are distant, this is certainly the artbook to get, and also it gives me so hope that one day we will be more than simple watchers.

The book open with a nice folded poster of the cover. Now I wonder if anyone try to remove the poster from their artbook. I never did it with my artbooks, only with magazines.

The book is full of page spread illustration, with comments at the bottom, and a margin for your thumb. There is no small illustration. Artstyle wise, Misakura Nankotsu is not that particular, it’s quite generic moe, not that I dislike it much. One good point would be the color, which are really vibrant.

These illustration from what I gathered are from the Famitsu PS, the famous weekly video game magazine in Japan. Judging from the information in the artbook, Misakura Nankotsu put one illustration every 2 weeks. Chance are no one has ever seen them except Japanese who get the magazine. I don’t think anyone get a video game magazine to scan one artwork; there are video game news in it.

I think it must have already striking for people that it’s rather ecchi. Pantsu here and there, girls cleaning your car… One thing I like in the artbook are the theme of the images. They are all from every day life, with all sort of girl’s in different uniform doing different jobs. There is no particular image to disturb this flow. I like fantastic one, but having a focus on every day life is equally as good in my opinion.

The book conclude with an interview of the artist. All in all, it’s a nice artbook, if you kind of like generic moe. The artstyle, while not being overly original, is clean… and ecchi. It also reminds me a little bit of the Uniform Moe Encyclopedia is similar in visual theme, except the artstyle is consistent, which is really a plus compared to the randomness of the encyclopedia.

Now concerning the article; it was my plan to use the scanner instead of the camera. But for big book, it’s very hard to flatten the book, and I usually lose 1/3 of the page. I also had some people telling me that my icon. 02 has color problem, which is true when I compare the images. However, in the current situation it seems hard for me to address this. My scanner is only on 8bits per channel, meaning that in term of color accuracy, it’s not very good. I might invest in a new scanner in the future, so if people has any recommendation for scanner, I’m opened ^^. I just scanned the cover, and tried some new processing. I would like to point out that there is no GreyCstoration Photoshop plugin for Mac, so I guess I will have to compile it one day.

Meanwhile, I had to use my camera. Using camera is a bit tricky, as the paper is the reflective kind, meaning I have to avoid projecting any hard light. I was surprised to see that my room lamp did make some reflection even though it’s quite a diffused light, so I switched it off. I had to use my lamp desk instead. Pointing it directly at the book proved to be inefficient even with a diffuser. My solution in the end was to point upward, and have some reflection diffuse the light. I think I can improve it a little bit again; I just though about being in front of a wall, since the light is coming from the bottom, and the top the page is less lighted than the rest. The photos reflect this different change of lighting. I will try to improve it over time.

Anyway, the loot is quite good, and some of these are already flying around on the Internet. There are other freebies from previous Comiket as well, for Kantoku, Rei, some Tinkle goods which was released for some event, and finally, K-books 15th anniversary artbook.

Here it’s, the 1kg, 2cm thick artbook from Pixiv, and I guess anticipated by artbook collector. I was expecting the same format as the Pixiv Girls Collection, but it’s not, and in fact, I’m a little bit dissapointed.

Pixiv Girls Collection was an artbook which emphasized more on illustration. There were a page spread section at the beginning, with wonderful art from chosen artist, and the rest was mostly half pages illustration, but still enjoyable.  The printing quality was also high, making it the thickest artbook I have ever owned until now.

Huke got a 4 pages treatment

Pixiv Official Book 2009, maintain this quality, but the focus is in my opinion, more on artist.
There is in fact, 1 to 4 pages per artist ( mostly 1 ) in alphabetical order. Unlike compilation book where every artist get a page spread illustration, there can be several illustration per pages, up to 7. Also notable, is the lack of tearfish. It’s now a cover with avatars from the artist featured.

The result is that illustration are sometime too small. The book presents 122 artists, with a little banner on top, to get their PIxiv ID, and their website. It feels more like some sort of index to browse Pixiv even more since I don’t browse Pixiv on a regular basis. There are lots of them, but here they choose some good one, and the book is a good way to discover them.

But let’s move to the content. Scan are not good, but most of the illustration are in fact already available on Pixiv. It’s also why I only link to Pixiv. Nevertheless, I will try to improve for other release, starting to prevent book from moving <.<

Tatetsu Keto

I usually don’t like Vocaloid. I don’t search for it in particular, but sometimes, when it’s different from the usual Vocaloid art, I appreaciate. It’s too bad the art was too large for scanning, so there is the binding discoloration. Hopefully, it’s on Pixiv, and in quite good resolution.  The resolution of the picture on Pixiv is in fact high enough for a 300dpi printing as large as the one in this book. Also, that cow hat is fun.

K,Kanehira

Other than character, there are also some landscape  featured, or even some photo or male images which won’t appeal to moe fan. But they are really rare.

Nardack

Nardack fill the hole left by tearfish as a Korean artist. I like that chubby  style and the color. It’s like Hyung Tae Kim making moe art. This is even more visible on this image ( it’s on the other page )which seems to be from Magna Carta.

Aruya

Aruya presents us with two different style. I already knew the soft style, used on the right; with little to no outline, mostly with contrast of saturation. On the left, I just discovered a more contrasted style, with defined outline, which is a change.

But if there is not enough soft style, there is still Shimeko and Onineko who are more well known I guess. They are quite similar in style, so I like them both.

Mirunai

On another note, Mirunai is an artist I have overlooked. I quite like the blue haired girl there.

In the end, it’s a nice book, but still my main gripe is the size of some illustration. I would have prefered less images per pages, maximum 2 like it was mostly in the Pixiv Girl Collection. But there some full pages one and some aren’t too small. But as I said, for me it’s a browsing guide for Pixiv. Some art are in higher resolution on the website or were printed elsewhere. If you are a regular Pixiv lurker, I think this artbook would  be less less interesting unless you like paper since chance are you have already seen the artwork.

Spring !

I finally received my package from Japan, small one for once but full of awesome.

The first figurine is just a bonus from the Dengeki Hime magazine for May, which I get mostly for the posters inside. Some of them are already scanned, so you can have a look at them there.

Aside of this, the usual suspect: artbooks !

Taiwan Teki Shoujo

One I meant to get for some time already, Taiwan Teki Shoujo as its name indicate is an artbook with Taiwanese artist. Notable one is Rei who is quite well known  in Japan too. But this artbook is also a chance to discover other taiwanese artist. If you want to see the inside, you can always poke at Hunting the Elusive . Personally I like the artbook. I don’t have problem with Taiwanese art, since it’s as moe as Japanese’s one.More is always welcomed ! I would have more gripe with manwha though, but that’s another issue.

Lyrical

Then, quite a thin one, Lyrical. It’s Fumitake Moekibara’s first commercial artbook as far as I know. Not really surprising but one part is the artwork for eroge by Lump of Sugar, Itsuka, Todoku, Ano Sora Ni and Nursery Rhyme. Then there is the fanart and lastly, a PurismxEgoist part, which consist of artwork by his circle, ZIP. I should be writing another article for the inside.

Pixiv Girls Collection

Last artbook I got is the Pixiv Girls Collection. It’s a compilation of the best artwork of the Pixiv community. I don’t usually browse Pixiv since I already moderate a board where people post Pixiv’s artwork over there already.

First thing that strike anyone when they see this artbook is its thickness.

On the left you can see the two previous artbook stacked, and the Pixiv artbook is on the right. The artbook has 164 pages, and thick smooth paper hence the total size. Cover is by tearfish and sadly it’s the only illustration by him or her in this artbook. With my recent addiction to Persona 4, I wish there would be some fanart by him/her. Otherwise it’s a nice choice and recommended artbook. Like most compilation, some art is not up to my taste, but there already quite a lot I like. Pixiv managed to get a good community of artist, so I hope in the future there will be another artbook. Chance are that otherwise, none of them would get a publication unless they make a circle. Once again you can poke at Hunting the Elusive for some scan

Last thing which I got some time ago, but didn’t write anything about because I was quite busy finishing a certain game.

Sakura Sakura

I don’t usually buy figurine but I made an exception for this one. Gymnastic sure is attractive ^^;

I can try and enumerate them from left to right. In the corner you can see a Tinkle dakimakura, shorter than my other one, but larger. I don’t have any pillow to fit in it yet. Then there is the Rei bag, a Tinkle brochure from JIF, Tinkle bag, AMR bag.

Next line, Unspoilt Pre-parade by AMR, Toragokoro  ( H doujin ) by Hisuitei, Tinkle Shitajiki.

Then Cloufout, the AMR calendar, QP:chick color 2, Colorful Pop 6, Pretty present Perfect, Way to color by AMR, Byakuya Chakai.

And finally, last line, a kind of bag by Rei, a telephone card, Midory Style Summer, a telephone card holder, a Adumi Tohru doujin, Maidism, second doujin by Tanihara Natsuki and its B&W companion, and a two-faced Shitajiki.

All in all I’m quite satisfied with the loot since most stuff is full color just as I expected. I wish the AMR doujin was full colored but there is the calendar to make up for it. I wouldn’t enjoy a doujin full of Toradora anyway, even though I like the serie. Tanihara Natsuki made her doujin a little bit thicker but it’s only for draft sadly.

It’s also the first I get something from Tohru Adumi, and it’s a nice doujin. I might tried to get another one, as long as it’s not a full boy featured one like some other I saw on the Internet. My only grip is girl with armor in this one which lacks in the moe department.

I will put some individual post for the amazing stuff. And when I said that it covered my bed, it’s literally since underneath everything is the Etsu bed cover !
